Mariasun Landa Etxebeste

Errenteria (Gipuzkoa),1949.

Having studied to become a social worker she lived in Paris for four years and there graduated in Philosophy in 1973. On returning home from the French capital she got down to learning Basque; she worked as a teacher at the Ikastola or Basque-medium school in Zarautz (Gipuzkoa) and then at the one in Lasarte (Gipuzkoa).

For several years she worked as a teacher in primary education and in the IRALE scheme (set up by the Basque Autonomous Community Government to provide Basque language programmes for schoolteachers). Today she is a lecturer in the Didactics of Literature department at the Teacher Training College of the University of the Basque Country (EHU) in Donostia (San Sebastian).

She writes articles for a number of magazines and newspapers.

1982 saw the publishing of her first book of stories entitled Amets uhinak. Most of her literary production has been devoted to literature for children and young people; she has had about thirty titles published in this field. Many have been translated into the languages of Spain (Catalan, Galician, Castilian Spanish) as well as into foreign languages (English, French, German, Greek, Arabic, Koreanà).

Among the awards she has received, the following should be highlighted: the "Lizardi Saria" awarded by the Town Council of Zarautz in 1982 for her story Txan Fantasma and the "Euskadi Saria" in 1991 in the Children and Young People's Literature section for her story Alex. She also won the "A.M. Labaien Narrazio Saria" for her narrative work Krokodiloa ohe azpian (Crocodile under the Bed) in 2002. This book also earned her the Spanish National Award for Children's and Young People's Literature in 2003.

Her book entitled Iholdi was included in the IBBY Honour List in 1992 and her book Elefante txori-bihotza was selected for the 2001 White Raven collection of the Munich International Youth Library. In March 2006 her Krokodiloa ohe azpian (Alberdania, 2002) was selected
for the IBBY Honour List for children's books.
