Xabier Amuriza

1941, Etxano (Bizkaia)

After entering the priesthood in 1965 he worked in Gizaburuaga and Amoroto, both in the province of Bizkaia.

From 1968 onwards he spent three spells in prison totalling seven years in all. In the general elections of 1979 he became an Herri Batasuna town councillor in Zornotza (Amorebieta, Bizkaia), a member of the Parliament of the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country and a member of the Provincial Assembly of Bizkaia.

He used to be a member of the panel of judges for the Bertsolari or extempore Basque poets championships organised by the Euskaltzaindia or Royal Academy of the Basque Country; when he was released from prison (1977), he was found to be a sharp, innovative poet with a beautiful voice. He won the Bertsolari championships in 1980 and 1982.

In addition to his political militancy he has earned a living as a writer, journalist, teacher and extempore Basque poet. He has worked as a journalist and writer of opinion articles for the newspaper Egin and has written opinion articles for the newspaper Gara and the magazine Punto y Hora.

For about eight to ten years from around 1985 onwards he worked at the Edertrack studio in film dubbing and in the translation of documentaries.

He had his novels Hil ala bizi (1973), Emea (1985), Oromenderrieta (1987) published, as well as his books of verses.
