Pello Otxoteko Vaquero

Irun (Gipuzkoa), 1970.

He holds degrees in Biology and Biochemistry and teaches in secondary education.

Between 1987 and 1992 he contributed to the Irun town council's Plazara magazine and has had a number of works published in the Egan magazine. He currently writes reviews for this magazine.

He has participated in many of the seminars on poetry organised at the Koldo Mitxelena cultural centre in Donostia (San Sebastian), like Euskalduna eta gaztea: poesia eta etorkizuna(2000), Juan Mari Lekuona, kezkaren antropologoa(2002), Jornadas en el centenario de Luis Cernuda (2002), Lauaxetan barrena (2005).

He has also won awards for popular written verses and poetry in the Gipuzkoan towns of Errenteria, Pasaia and Lasarte: the Xenpelar Award in 1984 and the first Bidasoa competition in 1985.

"In my view, poetry is a message, a concept set within a specific aesthetic framework. This aesthetic framework has to have music. If there are puns, in other words the playful aspect of the words, the beauty is further intensified," says Otxoteko.

In 1999 he published Haraindiko begiraden bila; this first publication of his develops the ways of symbolism. He then went on to write Itzalaren Ñabarduretan. As he says in the preface to this book: "This book is an inner journey and delves into the things, actions and feelings that cannot be seen on the surface."

In 2003 he published Arnasa galduaren ondarea. Igor Estankona, an EIE member, reviewed this book in the newspaper Deia. Estankona writes: "This book's greatest achievement is its precision, a kind of imperfect precision in which full, rich poems are used to describe the frontiers of death itself (of emptiness itself)."
