Pako Aristi Urtuzaga

Urrestilla (Gipuzkoa), 1963.

The first school he attended was run by Betharramite monks. He graduated in Journalism at the EHU (University of the Basque Country) in Leioa (Bizkaia). He contributes to the press by writing opinion articles. He has also done interviews and features.

He has contributed to the newspapers La Voz, Egin, Liberación and the radio stations Euskadi Irratia and Herri Irratia and has been a scriptwriter for the ETB (television corporation of the Basque Autonomous Community).

He tries to look for the unusual and surprising sides of reality and of the people he interviews and this endeavour of his earned him the Rikardo Arregi Award for Journalism two years running in 1992 and 1993.

He has worked with many genres: essay-writing Euskal kantagintza berria and Gauza txikien liburua, this book earned him the 2005 "Beterriko Liburua Literatur Aipamena"; novel writing Kcappo, Irene, Krisalida; short story writing Auto-stopeko ipuinak and children's literature Martinello eta sei pirata, Benetako lagunen aterbea etabar.

He has not neglected poetry, either: worthy of mention are Castletown, Oherako hitzak, Libreta horiko poemak.

In 1998-99 Aristi and the singer, Mikel Markez, went on a tour of the Basque Country with their show Tribuaren hitz galduak. It consisted of the words and voices, together with the songs and stories of the writer and the singer. On their tour from town to town Patziku Perurena, Igor Elortza, Benito Lertxundi and Patxi Ezkiaga collaborated with them.

The Erein publishing house has included a summary of Aristi's latest essay Gauza txikien liburua on its web page.

His latest book Note Book (Erein) was published in October 2005. Is it Journalism? Fiction? Essay? A Chronicle? Poetry? Without doubt a new approach to writing. It is certainly a different kind of book. This time it has been written as if the writer has withdrawn, just as a hermit does, to get a better view of the drama of our daily life above the daily obstacles, and to examine the steps we have taken in our existence. He appears to be viewing life from the sidelines, but through his brilliant reflections he positions himself right in the midst of our world, and that is where he positions the readers, too.
