Julen Gabiria Lara

Galdakao (Bizkaia), 1973

He is a graduate in Sociology, holds a diploma in Business Studies and is a translator with the Labayru Institute.

He has written two novels: Connemara gure bihotzetan (Elkarlanean, 2000) and Han goitik itsasoa ikusten da (Elkar, 2004), plus a biography: Iparragirre (Elkar, 2001).

He has also participated in a number of short story collections: Euskal idazleen ipuin erotikoak (Txalaparta, 1998), Bilbao: ipuin biltegia (Alberdania, 2000), Bero hezeak (Txalaparta, 2001), Marihuanazko bufandak (Txalaparta, 2002) and Ipuin izugarriak (Elkar, 2004).

With respect to his translation work he has translated from English into Basque two books by J. M. Barrie: Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens and Peter and Wendy, both of which are included in the book Peter Pan of the Universal Literature collection in Basque (Elkar-Alberdania, 2005). From English he also translated the play L. O. V. E. based on Shakespeare's sonnets, and he wrote two stories for the play Irakurle anbulanteak.

The most important awards he has won are as follows: The Short Story Competition of Galdakao (1996), the Erotic Short Story Competition of Basauri (Bizkaia) (1997 and 1998), the Igartza Bursary for his novel Connemara gure bihotzetan (1998), the Short Story Competition of the Muncipal Council of Basauri (2000), the Zazpi Kale Award for his novel Connemara gure bihotzetan (2001), the Igartza Bursary for his novel Han goitik itsasoa ikusten da (2002) and the Universal Literature Bursary (2003) to translate the books Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens and Peter and Wendy.

Furthermore, his novel Han goitik itsasoa ikusten da achieved the highest sales in the 2004 Book Fair of Bilbao for books written in the Basque language; it went on to receive the 2005 Zazpikale Prize.

He has contributed to many Basque-language publications: Berria, Deia, Bizkaie!, Asteon, Egin, Ortzadar, Aizu!, Egunkaria, Argia, Bizkaia Irratia, Bost Axola...

In the 2000-2002 seasons he worked as a scriptwriter for the Hasiberriak TV series and in 2002 for the Baietz gogoratu series of the ETB (Basque Autonomous Community broadcasting corporation).

Since July 2003 he has been directing the i>Irakurlearen Tartea literary circle of Bilbo. Since 2002, he has been giving classes on literary translation and has worked as a teacher in a number of literature workshops. On January 1, 2005 he inaugurated his personal blog , in which he recorded his reflections, until the 2006.
