Juan Luis Zabala Artetxe

Azkoitia (Gipuzkoa),1963.

He obtained a first-class degree in Basque Philology at the Donostia (San Sebastian) faculty (EUTG) of the University of Deusto. He worked as a teacher of Basque at the Cinema and Video School in Andoain (Gipuzkoa) between 1986 and 1988.

He worked as a reporter in the Culture Section of Euskaldunon Egunkaria until it was closed down. He currently does the same work for the newspaper Berria.

In addition to books, he has written numerous short stories and articles for the newspapers and magazines, including: Txortan, Ai ama, Atte, Susa, Literatur Gazeta, Plazara, Hemen, Irudimena, Literatura, Hegats, Euskaldunon Egunkaria, Egin, AHTaren Aurkako Aldizkaria, Egan, Jakin, Administrazioa Euskaraz, Ostiela!, Donostia Aisia, Buztinikara....

The literature expert Maria Jose Olaziregi says that in his novel Zigarrokin baten azken keak Zabala performs a psychological dissection of a person who is ill; the dissection of the main character who has lost his faith in science, development and God.

Zabala sprinkles his second novel Kaka esplikatzen with literary articles he wrote for the weekly magazine Hemen; Olaziregi believes that this narrative work clearly shows the influence of the Austrian writers Peter Handke and Thomas Bernhard.
