Joxemari Carrere Zabala

Pasai Donibane (Gipuzkoa), 1963.

He is a storyteller, actor and journalist. He became involved in drama activities at the age of 16. He has acted in numerous plays, the latest being Ez txakur, Ez otso, a work by René de Obaldia and performed for the first time in 2006.

He has lectured in drama in summer courses run by the UEU (Basque Summer University). He has been involved mainly in storytelling. Until now he has presented five or six story performances. He tells his own stories as well as ones adapted from popular tradition. The performance centres on current issues. Women: Mingain haragia; AIDS: Kondoi bakoitzak bere istorioa dauka; the updating of traditional storytelling: ; violence against women: Bai ona nire emaztea! Emazteak jaten zituzten gizonen istorioak. As a storyteller he has presented his work all over Iberia and in Latin America, too.

In the field of journalism he worked as a drama critic for the Basque-language daily Euskaldunon Egunkaria, which was closed down by a judge. He writes a monthly column on theatre for the Hika magazine. He contributes to the Mugalari literary supplement of the newspaper Gara. He also contributes occasionally to other publications. In addition, he runs the Mikelazulo story school in Errenteria/Orereta.
