Jon Alonso Fourcade

Iruñea (Pamplona), 1958

He is a graduate in Biology. He learnt Basque at the age of eight on the decision of his parents and thanks to the tuition of a priest, Pedro Diez de Ulzurrun. He has not only gained experience as a teacher of Basque with the AEK (organisation which runs Basque language and literacy courses for adults), he has also taught at a municipal Ikastola (Basque medium school) in Iruñea and has worked as a translator for the Parliament and Government of Navarre.

He wrote about creative writing in his book, Idiaren eraman handia, which won him the 1995 Mikel Zarate prize for essay writing. He also won the Joseba Jaka Literature Scholarship in 1998 for his essay-novel on the early twentieth century French painter Toulouse-Lautrec.

He translated Juanjo Olasagarre's Mandelaren Afrika (El Africa de Mandela) into spanish and História do Cerco de Lisboa (Lisboako setioaren historia) by the Nobel prize-winner Jose Saramago into basque.

In collaboration with Asisko Urmeneta, he published a book of expressions aimed at young basque speakers entitled Mantxut, which is full of highly humorous expressions invented by the authors.

In 2001 he won the Juan Zelaia prize for short essays for his work Agur Darwin (eta beste arkeologia batzuk).

He has contributed widely to the media (Argia, Egunkaria, Berria, Nabarra...). He has also gone from town to town giving workshops on storywriting (Hernani, Ondarroa, Elizondo, Berriozar, Iruñea, Arrasate, Lezo...).

He directed the Sormenari leiho literary programme for the Euskadi Irratia radio station for two years.
