Antton Irusta Zamalloa

Bilbo, 1963.

He attended the school run by Passionist Fathers in Euba (Bizkaia) before going on to do teacher training at the seminary in Derio (Bizkaia) and graduating in Basque Philology at the University of Deusto.

He currently works at the Urretxindorra Ikastola (Basque-medium school) and is responsible for Basque, literature and story workshops. In the field of television he does the Kontu kontari programme for Canal Bizkaia.

He became involved in the world of short stories in 1983. He has participated in the Story Marathon in Madrid, Barcelona and Guadalajara. In 2000 his book Ipuinen tailerra received an award from the Basque Autonomous Community for best reference book.

Over the years he has been giving story workshops for children, young people, teachers and parents. He also gives lectures on Garatu courses for teachers.

He is a storyteller. He is also a teacher and a writer but in the context of story telling. In stories there is a way of seeing the world linked to the culture and language of a country, and Antton's main responsibility today is to implant that corpus of popular tradition among school children. With the help of research he has given many seminars and classes to work on a methodology to kindle this interest at school. He is currently working on his PhD thesis on storytellers and story telling.
